How to Experience the Alternative Side of Lisbon
Lisbon, situated on the seven hills, has so much to offer that it makes it hard to choose what to see first. But if you want to feel the city’s soul, an alternative tour of Lisbon is the way. Famous for its narrow streets, colourful buildings, historical squares, parks and breathtaking viewpoints, the city allows for any type of visitor to enjoy its culture. The various types of street art created by local and international artists is also a highlight in this vibrant European capital.
You can easily find most of the touristy places by typing 'what to see in Lisbon' or 'what to do in Lisbon' on Google. However, not all people who come to visit this beautiful city want to visit just the popular attractions. Some people are interested in the non-typical places of Lisbon which usually are situated in a quiet environment further from the city centre. In order to reach these amazing locations, I join the Surfgasm team and we will guide you on a discovery of the Hidden Spots of Lisbon. Places that only street artists, locals and fans of Urbex know.
The Alternative Tour
Immediately after jumping on the Surfgasm van you can feel the explorer’s spirit. The van tour has five stops where people can take some time to relax in beautiful areas and enjoy the views from the viewpoints on both sides of the river. The Surfgasm guide also shares all his knowledge and secrets about the city. He will drive you to the fancy, former 60's restaurant, designed by the Portuguese architect Chaves da Costa, which is now abandoned. There you get the perfect opportunity to admire the art and graffiti on the walls and then access the breathtaking viewpoint known to be one of the absolute best in Lisbon.
During the trip, you will also walk into Parque das Necessidades which is one of the city's biggest secrets. It's filled with rare species of trees, cacti and interesting sculptures. From this park, you will see a beautiful view of 25 de Abril Bridge.
The Other Side of The Bridge
After crossing this bridge with the van, which is an experience by itself, you find yourself in Almada. Here you will see the huge statue, which was inspired by Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Next, the Surfgasm guide will take you to a building which was formerly used as a wine warehouse. This place is still abandoned; open to everyone it is covered in street art and wild vegetation. Here you will have an opportunity to feel like a real street artist and create graffiti on the wall by yourself. With many artsy retailers, design workshops, cultural organizations and unique restaurants this area will be perfect to end the day.
If you want to feel like a true urban explorer and a local, the Hidden Spots tour is the best way to do it. We know that some people are just not satisfied with the touristic, overcrowded places when on tour, so that is why an alternative tour should find its way into every traveller’s schedule. See you on the next Surfgasm trip!
